Overview:
I am a sensitive and determined instructor and I love teaching music and sharing its beauty. I am currently completing my studies at Kennesaw State University where I will be obtaining a degree in Saxophone Performance. While attending Kennesaw I have had copious teaching and performing opportunities. Prior to beginning my studies at Kennesaw I attended Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC), where I had the opportunity to play lead saxophone in all of the school’s music ensembles. At ABAC, I also had the opportunity to share the stage with trumpeter Michael Phillip Mossman, saxophonist Victor Goines, trombonist Harry Watters, and was a featured soloist with the jazz band during the 2010 Jazz Education Network Conference in St. Louis, Missouri.
EXPERIENCE
As an instructor I am willing to teach any student willing to learn. My number one goal is to share the knowledge that I have gained over the years, so that my students will be forever changed by my undying passion and dedication. I believe that music has and always will stand the test of time and it will never leave this earth, because it frees the world from obstructions. I have taught music for the past three years (mostly in home lessons). Jazz is a very important component to my lesson plan, because I want all of my students to understand the concept of improvisation. Improvisation makes students excited to see that music goes beyond what is on the sheet of paper. If a student is not having a good time making music, I am not doing my job correctly.
METHODS USED
For beginning students I teach out of the Rubank Elementary Method books. These books are most comprehensive for beginning students. As the student progresses I begin introducing them to solo repertoire, scales studies, and jazz improvisation. My approach is much different with adult students. I ask them what are their musical goals and from there I can create a curriculum based on adult student’s needs and wants. My teaching method works for all students, no matter the age or musical level.
LESSON STYLE
Music is a very tough discipline. It will not happen in one lesson, but what will happen is that students will instantly witness progress and this feeling becomes addictive. I challenge my students to practice hard because with that type of discipline the student will not only grow musically, but mentally as a human. I would not be the compassionate person I am today if it had not been for me falling in love with music.
