Associates in Musical Arts, South Puget Sound Community College 10 years of guitar experience 1 year of formal guitar training
I am a very passionate and enthusiastic guitar player and I am excited to start sharing my passion with others. I have been playing the guitar since I was 14. I come from family very musical family and have always had a love of the guitar. I love learning and mastering new songs as well as learning new techniques that I previously thought were too advanced for me. I find it very rewarding to finally master a new guitar skill. I am looking for teaching people new things and watching them learn and opening their eyes to the world of music.
Although I am new to teaching guitar, it has always been a career goal of mine. I started playing the guitar in high school and my passion has only grown from there. I've had one formal year of guitar lesson and the rest of my experience comes from self-teaching and playing with other musicians. In my early years, I joined a youth music program, where I was paired with other young musicians and we played several gigs together. When I was 20, I started an amateur band for about a year with my uncles. We would play mainly covers and we played gigs at several events in my community.
If the student is a beginner, I would start with learning the fundamental chords needed to for a solid start to a music education. I would pick out a few fun and easy to learn songs, that contain the beginning chords to keep the lesson fun and interesting. I always found it more interesting to learn a new song rather than just to learn chords. Alongside learn chords, I also like to teach the basic fundamentals of learning guitar, i.e pick holding, strumming, and the parts of the guitar. For an intermediate student, I would figure what they know and what style they like to play. I would adjust my lessons to the student's interests. Whether it's certain songs they want to learn or certain techniques pertaining to the style they are interested in.
My favorite thing about teaching people about guitar and music in general is that Aha! moment when a student is able to understand a concept, or the excitement of finally being able to play a challenging passage or song. Because of this I like to set goals that I feel are within a student's ability level, but will still challenge them and ultimately lead to progression. While I believe challenging yourself is necessary for improvement I also believe that if what your learning isn't interesting or engaging you will have trouble learning at all. I try to make my lessons challenging but fun to keep students interested which fosters learning and continuous improvement.
