ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:
BM, University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Vocal Jazz Performance
Overview:
Hi everyone, my name is Kyle I'm a recent graduate from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. I received my Bachelor Music in Vocal Jazz Performance from there in May of 2014, I also used to direct The Green Street Brew, an a Capella group from Northampton (but I still arrange music for them). My passion in music is coming up with new ideas for well known song as well as coming up with my own songs and lyrics. I love teaching people music in many different forms and untapping their musical potential. My styles include jazz, blues, rock, metal, progressive, folk, singer/songwriter, theatre, and anywhere in between. I own two guitars, (one acoustic, one electric) a keyboard, and a microphone. If you're interested in untapping  your musical abilities, I look forward to working with you.
EXPERIENCE
While still in college, I was a music tutor at North Star in Hadley For two years. I worked one-on-one with students in middle school on both voice and guitar. During my time there, I taught kids anything from different chords on the guitar, to breath support and passion in one's singing, to vocal improvisation and stage confidence. I've been away from teaching for a couple of years, but with the a Capella group, I have to accommodate for twelve different people and their learning styles. Even though we're all learning songs together, I'm always finding new tips and tricks to help everyone learn the way they need to. However, I am extremely excited in being able to teach one-on-one again and help out musicians any way I can.
METHODS USED
As a guitar teacher, I like to start with getting the student accustomed with each string, including how to tune a guitar and how to play different notes on each string. Next, I start teaching chords by starting with E minor and then moving as little as possible with the fingers so the student can understand the relation between certain chords. For voice, I start with posture and breath support and work on vocal techniques before we even start with singing songs. Finally, with piano, I use Alfred's Group Piano for Adults books 1 and 2. Of course, those are only guidelines and I'm always feline to teach a different way if it is not working for the student or if they're looking for something more specific.
LESSON STYLE
My greatest quality as a teacher is being flexible and listening to my students' needs. Not everyone learns the same way and to try to teach everyone the same way, you won't always get the results you want. That's why during my first lesson with each student, I try to figure out what the student wants to learn and how they learn best so we can come up with a plan that would work best for them, knowing that there's always room to amend that plan. I would say my second best quality as a teacher is being able to teach the theory behind the musical they are learning. I mainly teach voice, guitar, and piano, but through those styles, I also teach jazz guitar, vocal improvisation, classical and jazz theory, ear training, vocal technique, and composition  and arranging. I want to be able to cover as many areas of music that a student is interested in.

Kyle is very soft-spoken and patient with the kids. I have 8-year-old twins. One takes voice and the other guitar lessons from him. He comes with a plan for each of them and gives them goals to work towards.

Kyle H. is patient. He identifies and works well with different learning styles and interest in learning. He's always prepared. He emails recaps of lessons and frequently offers links to other forms of additional support for the student. He is easy-going and that personality trait tends to reduce tension in the student. He teaches 3 individuals at our residence including 2 children and an older adult.

My six year old daughter has been working with Kyle for a couple of months now and I am very impressed with both him and his interaction with her. She can be shy when it comes to doing something new and he handles her and her off days well. She had a piano teacher before and I never saw her want to touch the piano when the teacher wasn't there. With Kyle she sits and plays for fun during the week. My goal for her was simply that she enjoy herself and get to know the piano and I love that Kyle is helping her do just that.
