Course Work: University of Arkansas
Hi I'm Kyle, a current jazz studies major at the University of Arkansas. I have been playing electric bass for about nine years and I also have experience with guitar, drums, voice, and mandolin. I started off playing rock and other adjacent genres, but quickly moved more towards jazz. This has given me a diverse skillset that covers just about every genre of modern music as well as music theory. I have ample experience playing with others and performing live, as well as live improvisation. I look forward to sharing my knowledge with the next generation of musicians and helping them find their voice.
I am new to music instruction, though I do have previous experience in childcare. I worked as a youth development coordinator for the Boys and Girls Club of America as well as a youth soccer coach and referee. Musically, I have been playing music for many years mostly in CCM, jazz, latin, and funk groups and I have been singing in the Inspirational Chorale at the University of Arkansas for two years as well. My lessons will focus on engaging students by letting them pick the songs they'll learn as well as teaching them corresponding lessons on theory and technique to build their skills.
I think it is important to keep the oral tradition of teaching alive so most of the content during lessons will be learnt by ear, though supplemental physical materials will be used. Learning primarily by ear will help build student's listening skills which will be useful down the road when rehearsing with others or learning new tunes quickly. The student will start learning songs that they choose right off the bat, this will keep them engaged and more likely to practice. The student will also receive technique and theory lessons that correspond with the song they're learning at the moment. As the student becomes more advanced I'll teach them how to improvise to begin to develop their own voice.
I believe that one of the most important things a musician can do is to find and develop their own voice on their instrument. Listening to the greats like Miles Davis, Jaco Pastorius, Jimi Hendrix, and Chick Corea illustrate how a unique voice can manifest itself and make the music so much more powerful. Additionally, finding their own voice is important outside of music as well. To keep students engaged and improving, we will also set smaller more immediately achievable goals. We will also build skills that can help them play well in a band setting, and groups in mundane life as well.
