I started playing guitar at age 8. In my formative years I studied with various instructors around central Indianapolis until mid year of '85. Upon this time I studied a full year with James Lee Thorpe whom eventually played, toured & recorded with Sweet F.A. They released albums with MCA & Chrysalis Records. I began composing my own riffs, melodies and solo work at age 15 also. I studied Music Theory my Junior year at Ben Davis High School. Along the years I picked up Bass guitar, piano/keyboards, drums & vocals because the musical driven need to from a musician view or a composer's view.
My teaching experience with guitar goes back to about age 14, when I was understanding and advancing faster than others around me or someone would ask me for advice or help. I never had the chance nor opportunity to advance my studies to get a degree. Thoughout all these years it has been shown that some gifts are certainly not to be taken advantage of.
My views on teaching or being an instructor are vast. I evaluate what stage one is at and focus on the easiest ways for a student to understand their instrument and approach the musical side of learning. Every individual is different and their understanding of rhythm, melodies, chord structure, and time signatures can vary even though the fundamental structure of music and theory is relatively the same.
Upon a student's evaluation every lesson with any student should form it's own branch or life of it's own. Music is a passionate expression. I help students understand their instruments. Self expression, individualism, and self composition are traits I sought as a student and musician. My joy as a teacher, instructor and mentor is seeing the excitement someone achieves when they finally feel the "got it" or are starting to connect the dots.
