Hello there! I'm Kyle! I love teaching and love to see people flourish and learn a new skill or dig more deeply into an exsisting passion or interest. Music has been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember. There were always instruments around my house growing up as my father is a musician. I love passing on what was given to me. Music is such a gift and I am so happy to be able to enable others to give that gift.
I've been teaching on and off for about the past 10 years. I graduated from Mcnally/Smith College of Music in 2005 and have been teaching ever since. Sometimes my schedule has been more focused on performance as I have done national tours and exstensive recording but I've always been passionate about teaching. I've always enjoyed watching the "lights turn on" as someone gets a new idea or concept and the doors open for them creatively. Generating excitement for learning is what I would call my strong suit. If you're not excited about it we'll find a way to make it exciting. After all music is supposed to be fun! I've been playing guitar since I was 6, bass since I was 12 and songwriting all along. Music has very much become my second (or maybe first) language and one that I love to teach.
Depending on experience level I like to get people making music as soon as possible. I know that trudging through the basics can be tiring. Of course some basics are neccesary but I like to make the basics sound as musical as possible. We will cover the fundamentals but we'll do so in such a way that it won't feel like so much work. I like to use books, depending on skill level, for reference but I have a very hands on approach and feel that the best work to be done together is the stuff that can't be found in the book. Having a teacher to me is about getting constant feedback from someone who knows how to learn most effectively and efficiently. Most work from any book will be assignments for the off time in between lessons.
As discussed in "My Methods" I value our time together and want each student to get the most out of each lesson. I work with students to help them learn what they want to. Teaching to me is not a "one size fits all" deal. Different people have different desires and levels they want to get to musically. Some people want to learn music theory and the "why" behind music. If that's your desire I can teach you that. Some want to learn to play their favorite songs and have less interest in why they are that way musically. That's also just fine. I'm happy to teach as much as you would like to learn. Helping to create a more musical world is what brings me most joy.
