I have been working professionally in the industry for ten years. I have spent years perfecting my craft and would love to share my knowledge with others. Having an undergraduate degree in Commercial Voice has afforded me the opportunity to learn various styles of singing, This offers my students a unique chance to learn how to emulate their favorite commercial artists and create their own style within various genres. I have a strong classical foundation as well and would be happy to share my expertise in classical and operatic styles. Musical theatre is where I excel and I would love the opportunity to help students grow in their theatrical technique and learn to act through song.
While I was living in Chicago, I started my own voice studio. Unfortunately, after a couple of years I had to close shop when I moved to the United Kingdom to pursue my postgraduate degree in musical theatre. I directed, stage managed, and assistant directed many musical theatre productions and musical performances in Chicago, Nashville, Washington D.C. and London. I have had ten years of varied professional experience in the industry both on and off stage.
For all students, I like to get a sense of what sort of musical knowledge the student has before starting. It is highly important to me to figure out what exactly the student wants out of the lesson and I will adapt my teaching style to fit their needs. I am happy to take on beginning students with no knowledge of music or the voice and give them they fundamentals and work up from there. I will also take students who are professionals in the industry and may just want a couple lessons here and there to work on certain pieces or styles. It is hard to say "this is my method" because it constantly changes with each student and their needs. I will adapt to whatever a student needs and help them achieve their personal goals for their lessons.
I approach teaching by focusing on the student. I find out what they need and want first. We set realistic goals together and I give them the tools to help them reach their goals. I don't want my students to be entirely dependent on me. I like to give them exercises to do on their own in between lessons so that time doesn't go to waste and they can see quicker improvement with their own practicing.
