Overview:
I have been been playing piano in an academic setting for 20 years, voice for 9 years, and guitar for 8. During my time in high school I began teaching by tutoring my peers in music performance, music theory, and music history. I have studied various musical genres and I always love to cater my lessons to the needs of each individual student. I make it a habit of writing exercises for students so that they can work on something specifically suited to their current musical ability, and will help them grow as a performer. I look forward to meeting you all.
EXPERIENCE
I have taught both private and group lessons in music programs and schools within the Manhattan and Flushing area. I have taught students ranging from 4 to 35 in piano, guitar, voice, music history, and music theory. By getting to know each student's music tastes, I can create a lesson plan that makes practice seem less like a chore and more like something they feel inspired to do on my own. And that is always my biggest goal. I have noticed that all my respond more positively when they have the freedom to play music that they have an interest in rather than always being assigned what their teacher wants them to play.
METHODS USED
I use written materials including songs that have already been written by other composers, as well as my own etudes so that the lesson can be properly practiced. Depending on the individual student's technical ability and style of music they wish to learn, I write practice exercises specifically catered to them. These exercises will be focused on whichever technique we cover in the lesson, and after completion of this homework assignment, the technique should become second nature. It also serves to help those who have limited experience in reading music.
LESSON STYLE
I first ask each student to play for me so I can properly gauge the student's ability. From there, I assign practice pieces and songs that work on the techniques that require the most work. I have used this method for years and all of my students have found this to be the easiest and fastest way to improve. The practice pieces I write are written in the genre that the student wishes to practice. With the element of fun added, it makes music seem less like an unreachable goal and more like something just within the learner's grasp with a little bit of practice.
