MA, Asbury University, Music Business with Percussion Emphasis
I'm an organized and efficient teacher who loves to find ways to push students to the next level; whether that level is playing professionally or as a hobby. I believe in clear direction and learning how to play the right way the first time. I have been teaching lessons since 2006 when I started as a music major at Asbury Univeristy, a private, liberal arts college outside of Lexington, KY. Because of my love of music I consdier myself a lifelong learner and it is my passion to teach what I've learned to others.
I started teaching private lessons in high school, for free, to other students in the percussion section of both the concert and marching bands. Shortly after starting as a music major at Asbury Univeristy I continued to teach lessons. During my collegiate years I also was involved in taking private lessons and playing for all available percussion-needed ensembles (concert band, jazz band, orchestra, etc.). Consistenly since leaving high school I have also played in both rock bands and wedding bands and I consider these to be extremely helpful in my teaching experience. Those bands have helped me gain a greater understanding of what it means to play with other people, not to simply play my part correctly.
For beginning students I try to go slow and make sure that they get the fundamentals and essentials down. My beliefs are that learning each stage well will help expedite the process of learning and playing later in life. At some point shortly after the fundamentals we will begin on solo literature and possibly duet literature. I always want to tailor my lessons to the student, so that they come away both a better musician and learning music that they want to play.
A typical lesson would include a warmup and a short converstation to make sure that the student and I are on the same page. I want the student to have fun and enjoy the lesson but I also want to push the student to reach their goals. Goal setting is a very important process of any lesson. Benchmarks allow us to see where we're going and celebrate when we get there.
