I'm a Creative, Passionate, Music Loving person and Instructor. I share my experience of decades of private music instruction. I studied with the great master Lennie Tristano who presented me in Solo concert performance. I played Town Hall NYC and recorded a tribute album there to rave reviews in the New York Times. I have played concerts throughout the tri-state area as well as in Europe. I love to tailor each lesson as a custom fit for each individual students needs! I believe that with developing a clear understanding of what music is and how it works that someone can find there own identity and voice in music and develop and expand it unlimitedly with original creative results!
I studied with the Great Master Lennie Tristano and have about 15 years of intensive study like eight hours a day! There is no substitute for experience! This has afforded me the opportunity to teach privately in all style and genres effectively since high school. Bach was an Improviser and so it is in Creative Improvisation that we find the seed to musical creativity and the development of true originality! I have written six books on music published by Cherry Lane Publishing which are sol nationally. I have several International CD's released of my original music by my group "Liquid Jazz" "Liquescence/Liquidity which went to #40 on the US charts. I have written over four hundred original compositions which I use for recording, teaching and performance!
I always find out what the student likes and use that material as a format for developing good playing techniques and understanding, For beginners it's important to get it right from the start so playing and enjoyment can develop naturally. By immediately choosing songs they love the inspiration and motivation to practice will grow along with there playing. For intermediate students we balance repertoire and practice of the essentials such as scales, arpeggios, chord scales, triads 7th chords , melodies and progressions. For the Advanced student Improvisation based on vocabulary is key! Chord Substitution, Chorded Melodies, Performance, Originality, Voice leading, application of substitution for creative results and expansion of ones own original playing style.
I custom tailor my lessons to each individual student so that they are inspired and equipped to develop both their love and ability for playing. Balancing this with the proper techniques, understanding and exercises affords the opportunity to assimilate the material on a practical, useful playing level. The Joy that the student experiences in their playing as they develop gets transferred to the listening audience and is a very rewarding experience! I use some the methods and style of my great master teacher Lennie Tristano such as ear training, listening, singing solos and real time playing with the metronome to fully develop the students musicality!
