Overview:
I am a passionate and dedicated cello instructor and I always put my students first in their lessons. I have a master's degree in classical cello performance from a top NYC conservatory. In addition to performing music, I love to teach cello lessons to aspiring musicians of all ages! My musical aspirations stem from an undying love of music and my wish to share this with others. I am friendly, cheerful, energetic, and very patient, which creates an easy atmosphere for students to tackle the challenges of mastering the cello.
EXPERIENCE
I started teaching cello lessons 10 years ago in an after school program for 3rd and 4th graders. In this program, I taught music theory and group cello lessons for classes of 4-20 students. Around this time I also started teaching private cello lessons to students who wanted to move at a faster pace than group lessons. Since then I have taught many students of all ages and and levels. Many of my students have started to play the cello with no musical background or knowledge. I've also prepared my students for solo recitals, summer festival auditions, competitions, and performing arts high school auditions. My students are encouraged to perform, but lessons are paced according to the interests of the student. I like to hear what the goals of my students are and work with students to help them accomplish their aspirations.
METHODS USED
For beginners, I usually start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements books and Suzuki books 1-3 and supplement them with technical exercises. Once the student is comfortable with the fundamentals, I introduce appropriate cello solos and etude books. For children, I like to assign a well-rounded repertoire from various time periods and styles. Students of all ages can request to learn music that they find exciting. With adult students, I prefer to let the student direct repertoire choices according to their particular musical passions. This way lessons focus on the repertoire that inspires them the most. Most of a student’s time with their instrument is practicing at home, so I teach practice tips and tricks that help students make the most of their time and keep students focused during practice sessions.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching pulls from the Suzuki method and the great cello pedagogue Irene Sharp. I emphasize ear-training and a physically relaxed and technically accurate approach to cello playing so that students are free to create music without limitations or physical discomfort. Though playing an instrument takes hard work, it should be a fun and enjoyable experience too! We will work together to ensure that you or your child are learning pieces that interest you and inspire you to reach the next level. By the end of each lesson you will know what to work on for the week and exactly how to practice in order to achieve the most effective results. Students will learn the fundamentals of music theory and history while focusing on improving their technical facility on the cello. Students also work towards building their comfort with the instrument by practicing increasingly complex exercises and repertoire. Each lesson students practice ear-training and sight-reading so they are prepared for auditions and can learn music more quickly. Lessons will be age appropriate, highly interactive, and geared towards your/ your child's personal goals as an aspiring cellist.

There are only a handful of people I count in my life who were great teachers, and Laura is one of them. Her musicianship is so secure as are her technique and personality that she zeros in on my weaknesses and devises exercises to strengthen them, and during the lesson it is not "Do this, no, do that" which is unnerving to a novice. She understands the most important part of study is relaxation, so that is easy to achieve with such a confident and compassionate human. Music is her life and she is eager to share her talent with everyone. A rare find, indeed!

Laura is the kind of teacher you wish you had in all your studies: gracious, easy-going, light-hearted, yet behind the easy going exterior is an excellent musical mind with everything at her fingertips. I've had about 5 teachers in my life who count as really influential people, and Laura easily fits that category. She lets you be yourself so that you are fully present rather than old-school doctrinaire style, what I call "stiff as a German, sig-heil" teachers. She's the polar opposite. Brava, Laura! Thank you so much!

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
