I'm a passionalte and motivated flute instructor who loves working with students of all ages. I am committed to shaaring my love of music with all my students. I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree from California State University in 1989. Until that time, I was a member of the local symphony as well as playing in other symphonies, musical theater, private events, chamber groups, etc. I then moved to Dallas, TX where I attended and graduated from Southern Methodist University with a master's in Music Education and Flute Performance. I have been teaching in the public schools and my private studio since 1989.
I began teaching part time when I was in college. After moving to Dallas, I continued to teach part time while attending graduate school. Upon graduation, I began teaching full time during the day at public schools and evenings in my own studio. Encouraging reguler practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for my students. This tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the flute. I've also found that a combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy the flute and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. If a student isn't enjoyingi their lessons, then I'm not doing my job.
I typically begin my young students in the Suzuki Method for Flute, inwhich I have received the training for this method. For older students, I begin them in the Trvor Wye Method for Beginning Flute Students. I supplement both these methods with solos appropriate for their level and goals, such as UIL and other competitions. I always allow time for something fun and modern as part of the weekly practicing.
Finding what inspires the student is an important part of my teaching. With this information I can successfully tailor my instruction to the students desires and needs. I acknowledge accomplishments which helps fuel the students desire to progress and makes them eager to learn. It is important that the student progress at their own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Nothing is more rewarding tha seeing a student develop a passion for music and for flute.
Laura is great with our 10 year old daughter. She is disciplined, while patient and joyful.
My daughter loves her. She is very nice and patient.
My daughter really likes taking from Laura. She is courteous and kind. My daughter can be a reluctant participant at times, but I feel like Laura is encouraging and bringing out her best.
Laura M. taught me flute in the mid-1990's when I was 11 years old. I was ALWAYS first chair in my school. Laura taught me with patience, clear directions, and kindness. I wish I still lived in Plano so that my daughters could be taught by her. She teaches and makes music the way successful students learn best - from the heart.
