I am a pianist/musician who is passionate about teaching and sharing my love of music. I grew up in Mexico City and won a scholarship to study at the prestigious Interlochen Arts Academy. I then continued my studies at The Oberlin Conservatory and earned a Master's Degree at The Boston Conservatory. I have performed in venues such as Weill Hall in Carnegie Hall, the Tsai Performance Center in Boston, Harvard's Sander's Theatre and Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City. I also have three recordings available in iTunes. One solo recording and two Four Hand piano recordings.
I have been teaching privately for the past 15 years and I have had students of all ages and levels. I strongly encourage young children to have good and constant practice habits as this not only helps to succeed in the pieces they are working on, but it makes music learning all the more enjoyable! I do focus mostly on a classical and traditional approach of teaching but I am always open to working on specific music a student may want to learn as well. At the end of each semester I set goals and encourage students to participate in a piano recital and/or to also video record their pieces for online recitals too.
For beginners I typically start with the Bastien or Faber Method and as their level increases I always assign pieces outside of the piano method which are generally performed at their first recital. Adults are also welcome to participate and I have them work on at least 2 contrasting pieces based on skills they may need to work on as well as something they love and enjoy learning. I do give basics importance (scales, arpeggios, etc) as I believe this greatly improves a student's understanding and helps them reach a much higher level in the repertoire they are working on.
I am a big fan of planned practicing and it is especially important with younger students. I find that when students follow my exact practice instructions they play their pieces successfully! And nothing is more rewarding as a teacher than to see the end results of a student's hard work and to see them develop a love for music throughout the journey! I always set realistic goals so practicing never feels tedious or overwhelming. I always set a plan for each student depending on what pieces they want to learn and set a goal for what they want to accomplish.
I took piano lessons as a teenager for about three years and then, as an adult, I was inspired to play during the pandemic. Laura was recommended to me and I'm in awe of my progress. She is kind, patient, supremely talented and skilled, and has an impressive teaching style. She encourages me to learn pieces that are outside my comfort zone and has helped me advance significantly. I feel so lucky to have found her and see myself taking lessons with her for years to come.
