I have grown up in the wonderful world of music and my passion is to give you or your children the tools they need to be successful and have fun in both vocal studies and piano studies I was born and raised in Michigan, and have been studying music since age 4.
I began piano studies first and found a love of vocal music through church choir when I was still quite young. I graduated in 2015 from Albion College with degrees in both Vocal Performance and Cell & Molecular Biology. I then went on to get my MM from Bowling Green State University in Vocal Performance with an Opera Concentration. I have also spent time studying language and opera in both Italy and Vienna. I have had the opportunity to perform around the world as well, and those experiences have inspired me to teach so that I can help others reach their goals in music. I have worked as a Catholic Church Mass Cantor professionally for 7 years and have also performed in numerous showcases with both Sacred and Secular music.
I began teaching music privately just before I started college. I taught private piano lessons part time to local kids who couldn't afford to take lessons from larger studios. I started teaching voice lessons not long after that and I have been teaching ever since. Total I have around 8 years of studio experience. I like to emphasize having fun while practicing with my students. I never want them to feel practicing is a chore. I have found that this helps the student to progress more quickly and gain a true love of music. I also like to have my students work on a wide variety of repertoire, even if they would like to specialize in only one field. Coming from a liberal arts college,I find that having a specialty while also being well versed in other fields as well is important to a successful music study. I always want my students to be motivated to keep progressing and moving forward!
For Piano: I usually start with the Alfred's Basic books and work my students through those lessons until they reach a point where I can begin to use other repertoire books with them to give them supplemental work. I always use scales as warm ups for the hands, even if they are very basic for new students. If someone is more experienced, I gauge their level of experience and interests to help determine exercises and repertoire.
For Voice: I always start with basic exercises. Breathing, Scales, Etc. After a few lessons, when the student is solidified in basic techniques, I will begin to introduce basic Art Song repertoire and work with the student to branch them out into their desired field of study, whether that be Opera, Pop, Musical Theater, Rock, etc. I always feel a strong base in Classical Technique is important to start with though. From there I will help to tweak technique through some exercises and through the repertoire.
I always encourage my students to progress at their own pace and have fun while doing it. Not everyone improves and learns at different paces and I make sure to emphasize that with my students and when possible with their parents. I personally think that seeing a student reach a new goal is an important part of my job and it makes it all worth it in the end. I like to use positive reinforcement with my students to help them reach their goals. I believe that tough love should be reserved for only very specific cases and should never be used with young students.
