Hello! I'm a vocal instructor with 10+ years of experience at the college level, but have taught all voice types and a large range of ages! I enjoy teaching all types of repertoire and have expertise in classical literature and musical theater. I began my studies as a musical theater major and then transitioned into classical music, specifically as a mezzo-soprano opera singer! I have sung all over the world as a professional opera singer, including Italy, Ireland, Japan and many places within the United States. I still like to perform whenever I get the chance - recently I have sung the role of Mrs. Potts with the Muhlenberg Summer Theater Festival and have made several concert and recital appearances. I really enjoy helping young singers prepare for auditions and seeing them succeed--singing is such a beautiful way to express yourself and your artistry!
My teaching experience started when I was living and working in Chicago as a professional opera singer. Occasionally I would teach students when I had the time and was home for more than a few weeks. It was then that I discovered how much fun teaching can be and how rewarding it is to help another singer grow and discover new things about their voice.
In 2010 I moved to the Lehigh Valley and began teaching at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA. My student load for teaching was quite large right off the bat, but I found out quickly that it was absolutely wonderful to teach so many different kinds of singers! The students I teach at the college are mostly Theater Arts majors, but all of them enjoy learning a basis in classical technique. Next year will mark the beginning of my tenth year of teaching at Muhlenberg, and I couldn't be happier or more proud of the students I have taught! I also started teaching at Lafayette College this past fall, and have enjoyed working with the singers there as well!
I teach a breath based technique with a focus on relaxation. I want to help each individual find their true instrument. I like to use the 24 Italian Songs and Arias (Italian Art Songs) book as a basis for learning breath technique, legato, use of vowels and musicality, as well as being exposed to a foreign language. Alongside of this practice can be musical theater pieces that will target the areas of your voice that need attention and growth. I always begin lessons with breath building exercises, move into vocal exercises as a warm up and then work on a piece for the remainder of the lesson time.
I have a routine that I use for the lesson time--breath exercises followed by the vocal warm up and then working on a piece. During that process I always encourage an open dialogue between myself and every student. I want to student to feel as comfortable as possible and always have the option to ask questions and take part in their development as a singer. My goal is to provide a nurturing and inspirational environment for every singer, despite that individual's level of singing or experience.
