I am passionate a motivated while also being able to teach all levels of saxophone and clarinet. I have both a Bachelor of Music from the University of Oregon and a Master of Music from the University of Wyoming in Saxophone Performance. I have played both saxophone and clarinet for over twenty years. I have taught privately and in group lessons at the novice, intermediate and collegiate levels. In high school I was named the best saxophone soloist in the state and won numerous awards in both jazz and classical. I competed in numerous chamber ensemble competitions, and have experience in large and small ensembles, athletic bands, theatre music and so much more. I look forward to welcoming new students!
I began teaching young, beginner students roughly fifteen years ago. This progressed to teaching collegiate saxophonists while at the University of Wyoming. I understand that everyone student learns differently, and I'm comfortable teaching in whichever way is most helpful and beneficial to the student. I am most experienced in classical saxophone, though I am capable in teaching beginning jazz and swing. Whether it's basic fundamentals to virtuosic repertoire - I am able to teach and refine your skill.
I believe that fundamentals are the most important, and these should always be a focus. However, I also understand that you play an instrument to have fun as well. I believe that there should be a mixture of hard work and play, and will often assign fundamental exercises combined with solo or duet material. I also believe there should be an overarching goal to be achieved - this could be anything from intonation, to memorizing scales, to performing a recital. Something that shows the student that they are learning, progressing and capable.
I believe that it's best to learn by example, and in music this is often by demonstrating with the instrument. I will always have my instrument out to play along, or demonstrate what I am expecting. I expect my students to practice what is assigned to them so we can both have a productive session with each other, however I do understand that life happens. I try different techniques throughout the lesson to ensure that what I'm teaching is resonating with the student. Everyone learns differently and has different goals - I'm here to help! I want this to be fun, informative and beneficial.
