BFA Musical Theatre
Hello, everyone! My name is Lauren and I am so excited to start teaching in the Chattanooga area. I have just moved here from Atlanta and I am loving the community here. I am well versed in classical and musical theatre styles but I can adapt my approach to meet your specific needs. I have taught for many years around the Atlanta area for kids and adults ranging from 7 years old to 65 years young. I believe that everyone has the gift to sing. Everyone can use their voices for self expression or story telling. I very much customize my approach for each student as no two voices are the same. I love music and playing with my amazing dog, Quintin.
I began performing when I was 3 years old and had the theatre bug ever since! I pursued music and theatre all of my years including my college days. I graduated from Reinhardt University in 2013 with my BFA in Musical Theatre. I helped start a performing arts business in Atlanta and traveled all over teaching kids and connecting them to the right people. I have been to NYC many times to help arrange master classes etc. and have created a web of contacts there which I constantly lean on for insight to the profession and for creative inspiration. I have traveled to almost every state teaching theatre to kids of all ages when I worked for a musical theatre kids theatre named The Missoula Children's Theatre. I believe the arts are more than entertainment. They are guiding stepping stones to help every person become a better version of themselves and the arts have been proven to encourage confidence in people of all ages.
For the first couple lessons, you should expect me to evaluate the level of the student and isolate problem areas. I will help the student create short term and long term goals, whether it is for a class project or a giant audition coming up. I then tailor my lesson plans based off of those personal goals. I will get a feel for what each student is looking for in a coach and try my best to exceed those expectations by catering a method that is perfect for them. No two students or voices are the same and so they shouldn't be treated uniformly. I went to school for Musical Theare so many of my approaches start simple with breathing and talking excersises.
I prefer to let each student work at their own pace based on their specific goals. I am both encouraging and challenging to my students. I will never assign something that is way too easy or something that is not achievable for that particular student. I like to look at teaching as a collaborative effort. I always end up learning from my students. I lean into something most people know how to do- speak. Singing is an extended version of speaking. To keep things simple, we start with breathing and supported speaking and grow from there. It is important to lay a very firm foundation before adding on any bells and whistles. Technique is super important to both function and long standing voices.
