Hi! My name is Lauryn L. and I am 19. Right now I go to BYU, and I am studying Viola Performance. I started viola in 6th grade and have been playing ever since. From 10th grade to 12th grade I went to the Gifted Music School Conservatory in SLC. I graduated from there last year. I have been able to work with many professional musicians through this music school. My favorite memories from my music experience so far was playing in Abravanel Hall with the Lyceum Philharmonic Orchestra, and playing 2 outdoor concerts at Thanksgiving Point Ashton Gardens with them as well. I also had the opportunity to play in the Tabernacle at Temple Square twice, playing Saint Saens Organ Symphony, and Beethoven's 9th symphony.
I've had no official teaching positions yet, but I have had the opportunity to teach music in more casual contexts. Being the principal violist of the Lyceum Philharmonic for a year, I was tasked to conduct sectionals, and help the viola section become more solid. Also, I sometimes will help my younger brother with his piano practice, helping him solve musical problems, and enjoy playing more. Every week in college, I attend a viola masterclass with my colleagues, and we all give each other suggestions. My viola professor has mentioned that I have quite helpful suggestions. I want to teach to spread the joy of music!
I have learned a lot from my previous teachers and mentors and hope to use their effective teaching styles to teach my own students. 1 lesson per week is a great amount. Keeping a music to-do list or music journal is great for organization. Scales and etudes build strength, intonation, and are a great and crucial warm up for exciting repertoire. All scale books are great, and half the time, you don't even need.a book! When first taking private viola lessons I studied Wohfahrt Etudes. Playing 1-2 level appropriate pieces is a great amount. Repertoire from the Suzuki books are fundamental stepping stones into becoming a better musician. I always enjoyed when I got to play a piece that I chose out myself, so I want to allow my students to find a piece of music on their own that they would love to play. Finding recordings on music apps or youtube can help to learn the piece in a different and fun way, because its an excuse to watch youtube! Besides scales, etudes, and pieces, I want to encourage my students to come to me with any questions about the music they are playing in their school music classes, orchestras, theory questions, and help with any technical instrument issues, like tuning, fixing strings, finding a good shoulder rest, how to rosin your bow and how much to tighten it. All these little things add up to make well rounded and knowledgable musicians.
I want the teaching environment to be a safe, creative space where mistakes are allowed! I believe the best way to learn is from mistakes. I want to make sure my students know that it's okay to not be perfect. We can try our best, and I will be very proud of your best work, whether thats practicing every day, or practicing only when you have the mental and physical energy. We all go at our own pace, and we should not compare our musical progress to others' musical progress. I will help my students make their own unique musical goals and gradually achieve them through a kind and loving teaching approach. I will adapt to each of my student's learning preferences, whether that is visual, aural, or written. I will give positive feedback, and step-by-step ways in which improvement can happen. I will encourage my students to reward themselves for their hard work and progress however way they like, as long as they make sure to do it:). I hope to create a happy relationship with their instrument and the music world.
