Overview:
I am a trained educator with a Master's degree in Music Education, licensed by State of New Jersey Department of Education. I completed advanced Violin studies and chamber music coaching at a number of institutions including Music Mountain, Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Mannes College of Music, Dartmouth and Vassar Colleges. I currently perform in a number of orchestras in the Metro New York area. I am a violinist with the baroque recorder ensemble, Musica Dolce, of the Highland Park Recorder Society. I teach from beginning to advanced level students, ages 6 to adult.
EXPERIENCE
I began studying the recorder in Israel at the age of five. Keenly interested in music, I embarked on my lifelong love of the violin at age seven when I began violin studies with Leon Asa. After emigrating to the United States in 1958, I continued my early violin studies with the late Emily Cleve Gregerson of Omaha, Nebraska. In 1967, while an undergraduate at the University of Chicago, I was accepted as an advanced violin student by Elliot Golub, who was at the time a member of the Contemporary Chamber Players at the University of Chicago under Ralph Shapey, and a founder of the acclaimed Music of the Baroque series in Chicago. In 1968, I auditioned and was accepted with scholarship to Dartmouth College as a participant in the Convocation of the Arts summer program. Upon my return to Chicago, I studied with the late Morris Gomberg, then Chairman of the Strings Division at the Chicago College of Performing Arts/Roosevelt University. My studies with Mr.Gomberg were interrupted in 1969 when he stopped teaching due to illness.  In the years following, I began to study the chamber music literature, participating in a number of chamber music workshops and master classes including programs at Mannes College of Music/The New School, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Music Mountain, Vassar College, and VMAC (Vermont Music and Art Center). My coaches have included Ida Kavafian [The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center], violinist Maria Radicheva (Manhattan School of Music); Yuri Vodovoz (violin) at Mannes College of Music/The New School. I currently perform with several groups including the Radiance Chamber Ensemble, Society of Musical Arts, Musica Dolce, baroque music ensemble of the Highland Park Recorder Society; the Metropolitan Orchestra of NJ, Baroque Orchestra of NJ and State Repertory Opera Orchestra.
METHODS USED
I have created a curriculum which is comprised of the Suzuki series for Violin, the String Builder Series by Samuel Applebaum and Introducing the Positions as well as Scale studies by Harvey S. Whistler. Music theory is taught using the Master Theory Series by Charles S.Peters and Paul Yoder. Additional Etudes that focus on Bowings, and Double Stops are taught to the more advanced student. Musical compositions such as Sonatas and Concertos by the major composers continue to develop the skills of the advanced student.
LESSON STYLE
I enjoy teaching violin to students of all ages and seeing them progress from novices to advanced players.I develop a rapport with the students and their parents and tailor the lessons to match their goals. Several of my students have auditioned and been accepted by orchestras such as the Essex County Youth Symphony, the NJ Youth Symphony, the Westfield Youtn Orchestra and the  Montclair Gamer Orchestra. Several students have continued their music studies at Berklee School of Music in Boston and the Cali School of Music at Montclair State University.

I've been a student of Lea's for several years and she is amazing! Every lesson I learn something new and helpful, even after so long, and she works with me to figure out my strengths and weaknesses when playing violin. She even takes the extra step to shape our music lessons around music that I like and thrive with. She's always pleasant and I couldn't recommend her enough to anyone, young or old, looking to learn violin.

A wonderful teacher! This is the 4th year my daughter is taking class with Lea and we are very very happy to see the development she has made. Lea is very patient, a caring teacher who also has time to listen to her students interests.

My son has been Ms. Lea’s student for over 4 years now. Even through the pandemic, the pace and progress continued with adaptation to remote lessons. This speaks to Ms. Lea’s skills as a teacher, and the great rapport between teacher and student. She sets high standards and provides encouragement. Highly recommend!
