I am a music lover and I love to teach. I have a BA in Church Music as well as a MMus with a focus in vocal music. I have studied with many awesome vocal teachers across the United States, as well as participated in the Hawaii Performance Arts Festival where I played multiple roles and gained on stage experience. I also sing with the Hawaii Opera Theater chorus and have performed in 7-8 full professional operas. I also sing locally with the Mae Z Orvis Opera studio, where I can experience training exercises, multiple performance opportunities, and gain feedback from my peers in music.
As as teacher, I have a wide array of experiences. I began my teaching career in 2012 where I taught general music (and later Art) to kindergarten through grade 8 for 5 years. I taught basic theory, music history and performance, as well as ukulele and recorder and worship band. In 2017, I became a graduate assistant at the University of Hawaii at Manoa where part of my teaching duties included teaching the Voice I class for two semesters. I taught them the basics of singing, from breathing and posture to tone quality, rehearsal and performance techniques, and memory skills. During my whole teaching career, I have also maintained a private studio ranging from 1 - 10 students at a time. I love working one on one with students and really helping them realize their potential.
For very young, or beginner students, I use elements of MusicPlay, which really make learning the basics of music fun and applicable. For intermediate or slightly older students, we would go over the basics of singing technique, including posture, breathing, tone, register, and interpretation/performance, usually in that order. We learn through vocalizes and art song, moving to more complicated pieces as progress is made. For older or more advanced students, I would tailor my teaching methods to what you desire to accomplish. If you want to audition for operas or classical things we would focus on how to do that, versus if you wanted to do a musical or something more commercial, I would change how I would work on things with you to fit that brief.
I love seeing my students find a love for music and develop skills they never thought they had. I love seeing them recognize how difficult singing is, but that they can do it. I love working one-on-one with my students and developing a relationship with them so I can better teach them and understand how they work as a person. I like to establish realistic smaller goals for them and help them to accomplish those goals one by one and add on harder things as they grow in skill. I also like to get them performance opportunities when possible, as that is a big part of learning about singing.
