I have been playing the trombone for over 15 years, and I have been teaching private lessons on all brass instruments for more than 10 years. I grew up in North Carolina, and I did my undergraduate degree at The Boston Conservatory and my masters at Arizona State University in May 2014. I am a second-year doctoral student at the University of Maryland! I have had the opportunity to perform throughout the New England Area, the Southeast, the Southwest and Italy. Performing and teaching are my two greatest passions in my life.
In the first lesson, I assess the student's current ability and also discuss the student's personal goals and interests in music. Based on this information, I create a daily fundamentals routine for the student to use to improve the basic building blocks of playing a musical instrument. I also allow students to bring in music that interests them from solo material and pieces of music from band class. Approximately half of the weekly lesson is spent on fundamental materials that I assign weekly, and the other half is spent on the student's chosen material. I find that this approach keeps the student interested and inspired while also sending them down a path of improvement by having weekly goals and checkpoints in his or her daily fundamentals routine.
