I am an enthusiastic musician with a unique approach to the double bass, backed up by years of experience performing with first rate symphony orchestras. A graduate of the Peabody Institute and Northwestern University, making music is a foremost source of joy in my life and I find it equally rewarding to work with students who share and develop their enthusiasm and skills! Symphony orchestra music is really my speciality, and I enjoy helping students prepare for their performances and especially their auditions.
I have been teaching upright and electric bass lessons to students of all ages and skill levels for nearly twenty years, and have a Masters degree in Music Performance and String Pedagogy from Northwestern University. Some of my favorite teaching experiences come from my time on the faculties of Dickinson College and the Performing Arts Institute of Wyoming Seminary. Students of mine have completed Bachelors degrees in music from top conservatories and gone on to successful full time careers.
I will often start beginning students with George Vance method books, emphasizing sound setup, facility, notation reading and musicality. With more advanced students, we will evaluate their tastes and experience to determine the best music for study. The Bach Cello suites are a life long endeavor for many bassists, and the major concertos and sonatas are a way for the motivated bassist to attain performance opportunities. A positive attitude and a thorough practice regimen will go a long way in addition to our lessons.
It is very excited working with someone who is enthusiastic about music making. One way to achieve this kind of enthusiasm, and really cultivate a sense of joy in a musician’s playing, is to set specific and attainable goals for a student’s technique and musicianship. As a teacher, I demonstrate this enthusiasm and focus as much as possible during the lesson, with the hopes that the student will keep it going during the week and build upon it for the next lesson! I encourage creative and critical thinking, and will often put about as much into the lesson as I am sensing the student/parent is putting into it.
