Hi, my name is Leon, and I am a Countertenor from Newark, DE. I have been a student of music for over 13 years. My musical influences include Disney, Church music, Choir, Opera, and Musicals, and I also enjoy Karaoke now and then. I am a student at the University of Delaware working on my Master of Music in Choral Conducting. I love making music of all kinds, and I especially love highlighting the voices of those underrepresented individuals in our field. With me, you can expect a teacher that is passionate about exposing students to many different cultures, styles, and music.
In my lessons, you can expect to learn how the voice works, what works best for your voice, how to use language as an avenue for healthy singing, and try new things you might need more clarification on at first. A part of music-making is making mistakes and learning and growing from them: we can make that happen together. I like to tell my students to be confident. Don’t be afraid of what sounds your voice may make–any sound can be produced and made healthily. My favorite thing about teaching is getting to know, learn, grow, and work with my students & families.
My approach as a teacher is to see what the voice is already doing and improve on the foundation that we already have. All music-making is positive music-making. My students love that I laugh and chat with them during our lessons. I primarily teach Musical theater and characterization, but I can also teach classical music and diction (languages). I believe that style, voice phenomenons, language/diction, artistic innovation, decision-making, characterization, and active choice-making are the best ways to get someone to make great music.
My teaching style is fun, exciting, fresh, modern, educational, and accessible. My teaching philosophy is that music-making should be 50% fun and 50% productive. In my lessons, you can expect to learn how the voice works, what works best for your voice, how to use language as an avenue for healthy singing, and try new things you might need more clarification on at first. Voice lessons should be about how to utilize your voice in the way you want and that is precisely what students should expect from me.
