BS Music Education Auburn University
Associate In Arts Southern Union
When I was teaching piano at Toms Music in LaGrange GA we were nominated best place in Troup County to take piano lessons. At that time I was the only piano teacherthere.
My teaching experience dates back to my early years in jr- college, My professors even referred students to me for guitar lessons. After graduating from Auburn University with a BS in Music education , I taught private lessons in my home. Performing throughout the United States, England and Canada was a great experience for me until my daughter was borne. After that I started teaching Music at home and at several music stores. I also led worship at several churches of various denominations. Living in the Nashville area has given me a lot of opportunities as a musician and music teacher.
My teaching experience goes back to my high school days. After I learned how to play guitar and played in a few bands, I knew that persuading a career in music was my passion. I taught a few students at my home and after high school attended Southern Union where I graduated with an associate in arts degree. In 1976 I graduated from Auburn University with a BS in Music Education. I love to see students progress in their talent. I have also taught students with special needs and have seen positive results.
For beginner guitar students I use Mel Bays “ You Can Teach Yourself guitar” . I emphasize chords and technique and playing melodies. For piano students I teach students first to listen and immitate and then read. Once they master some basics in reading music I introduce chords. My vocal students start each lesson with warmups and apply the techniques to the songs that they are learning. I believe in making lessons fun and enjoyable but at the same time emphasize the importance of daily practice.
Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music ! Therefore it’s important that each student progress at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for each student. Acknowledging accomplishments help fuel a student’s desire to progress. I tailor lessons to the student’s level as well as there interest in music. Many of my students have gone on to become professionals or involved in their church, school or community music programs. Many of them have played in bands and worked in recording studios.
