31 Years of Experience Performing and Teaching as a Guitarist
Overview:
I have always loved teaching and sharing my love of music with my students. I graduated from The Manhattan School of Music in 1997 with a Masters Degree in Classical Guitar Performance. I have had the opportunity to perform at such wonderful venues as Carnegie Hall, Guitar Festivals, and a number of other venues such as the Knitting Factory. I play and perform different types of music. I also play the piano and the bass and frequently for recording purposes. I am also able to teach those instruments as well.
EXPERIENCE
I have 31 years of experience both performing and teaching music professionally. I began playing and teaching while still in college and Never stopped. When I lived in NYC I taught at the Third Street Music Settlement, as well as privately, while also maintaining a steady performing career. I have been teaching in the Upstate N.Y. area for over 10 years now. Of course as a teacher I always encourage a regular practice regiment, while also teaching every student as an individual with various different needs for them to focus on. Because I teach multiple styles and instruments I can generally find a way to relate with the majority of students.
METHODS USED
What Books and Methods I use depend on whether the student has a particular style in mind from the beginning of their studies. I will often use the Frederick Noad series of Books with students who know they want to study Classical Guitar and then progress to repertoire when the time seems right. If they aren't sure of what direction they want to go in I will use the Hal Leonard or Mel Bay Books to get them started, and when I start to see what direction they want to go in I will begin introducing different songs and repertoire to see what direction they seem to be headed towards.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style has never been to try to create students who think or play just like me. I want to help them to find their own voice as musicians. Of course I make suggestions, but if I see they have a strong idea about something I think can work, I will help them try to find their way. If I think it's a bad idea I will tell them that as well. I also try to help them find practice techniques that work better and generally work faster, for example spending more of your practice time on the parts you have the most trouble with as opposed to simply running through the piece and making the same mistakes every time, because what ends up happening is you learn the mistakes simply by repeating them.
