I am a passionate music teacher who loves the one on one instruction I can provide to students. I taught elementary music in a small town in western Kansas for two years, and had private students in piano, voice, flute, and trumpet. Currently I am working on a Master of Music degree in instrumental conducting and am expected to graduate in May of 2016. I am also the assistant director of Shocker Sound, which is the basketball band for Wichita State basketball. We travel for tournaments with the team. In addition to being a skilled flutist, I am a percussionist, singer, and I play some piano. I'm so excited to share my skills and expertise with students who want to grow in their musical activites, and nothing makes me happier than seeing a student improve.
My teaching experience began when I was in high school. I did an independent study with the sophomore women's choir, and I got the opportunity to conduct on the final concert. When I went to Washburn for my music education degree, I had lots of experience in several public schools, observing other teachers and instructing students, as well as earning a spot as a staff member for the marching band. I had my first private students after I obtained my degree, and gained new students when I taught in western Kansas. I love helping students love music and it is important that I am encouraging them to continue their musical education and not hendering them. Students need to have fun! With both modern and classical instruction in any instrument or while singing, students will be more motivated to practice on a regular schedule and if they have any questions, they can contact me.
Because all students have a unique style of mearning, at any age, I usually choose music that fits the student's ability at that time. If a student has a special request to learn a certain song, we discuss if it will be appropriate for them, or if they have to work up to that level. For piano students, I use the Thompson piano series (red book), and for other students, especially flute, there are methods books that I teach from.
The one aspect of teaching I love the most is seeing other students develop a passion for it. Every students learns at their own pace, but this doesn't come without hard work. I encourage my students to work towards something, setting goals and gaining rewards when those goals are met. At the first lesson my students will tell me what they want to do with their music. From this information I can cater my teaching style to the needs of the student.
