"Without music, life would be a mistake" -Friedrich Nietzsche
Everyday I get to teach the joy of music to others and it is awesome. I love being a teacher and sharing my love of music. I have been in music since I was ten years old have been playing now for over 20 years. I studied Music Education at San Francisco State University and was able to take Trumpet lesson's from the SF Opera's principle Trumpet player Adam Luftman. I have taught in San Francisco, Virginia and am now lucky enough to be living and teaching on Oahu.
I found my love of teaching music early, while I was still in high school I volunteered my time at my old middle school. Since then I have been teaching music privately and in public schools for the last 9 years. I have helped students of all levels and had private students win auditions in county and district events on the Trumpet. Time with students is the most precious resource you get with them as a teacher so my philosophy is to always be prepared and maximize the time I get with students.
To help achieve this maximization it is important to build strong relationship and trust between student and pupil. I believe in teaching students how to practice correctly and how to use their own practice time wisely as well as challenging students in order to continue progressing. I encourage my students to audition for school and county events, competitions and bands so they stay motivated to continue learning and build a strong sense of their own abilities.
I use a broad amount of materials that I tailor to each individual student. Trumpet students use a variety of materials from the Arban Book, H. L. Clarks "Technical Studies," Max Schlossberg's "Daily Drills and Technical Studies" and a variety of solo and duet books. It is important that each student learns at a speed suited to them and each lesson is personalized so the student is challenged to grow but not overwhelmed.
Beginning Piano students start with a mixture of Alfred's Basic piano and Piano Adventures by Nancy & Randall Faber. depending on ability and level.
I am very patient and supportive of my students. I do my best to encourage when needed, push when appropriate and praise when justified. It is imperative that each student is working towards goals that are right for them and encouraged to reach further and grow. I like to be a positive force in my students lives, someone that they can trust, look up to and know that I do care about them and whats going on in their life. When students succeed they gain confidence in their own ability and music is a great way to help kids become well rounded and confident individuals.
