I am a passionate music instructor who loves working with students of all ages and abilities. I have a Bachelors Degree from the Boston Conservatory, and a Masters Degree from Florida State University, both in guitar performance. I have taught the Suzuki Method for young children, as well as many other general methods for both younger children and older students. I like to design my approach around each individual student, depending on their interests, age, and ability. I also have experience working with students with nuerodiversities and learning challenges, and I am patient and thoughtful in my instruction of all students and their varying needs.
My teaching experience began as a Teaching Assistant at Florida State University where I taught undergraduate guitar students. After graduating from Florida State University, I moved back to Massachusetts and taught guitar both privately and through local music schools in my area. I teach all styles of guitar, including electric, acoustic, and I specialize in Classical Guitar, and all ages. Using the Suzuki Method, I have taught many children as young as age 3. With the Suzuki Method the students learn to play the instrument first, and to read music second, removing the obstacle of reading notation until the students learns some technique on the guitar. I have also taught students of varying ages using traditional teaching methods. I like to pace the lessons based on each individual student. I understand that students have other obligations and I do not believe music lessons should add stress to the students. I like to offer my students play along recordings to make practicing more fun. Students should enjoy music! I feel that we learn together and move at a pace that works for each individual student. Depending on each individual student, I like to incorporate guitar technique, some music theory, some ear training, and any other interests the student would like to pursue with their music.
For younger beginning students, I typically start with either the Suzuki Guitar Method or Alfred's Kid's Guitar Course 1. For older children, I typically start with either the Suzuki Guitar Method or Guitar for Kids: Hal Leonard Guitar Method. Students are able to progress through the Suzuki Guitar Method through multiple volumes, or move through the Hal Leonard Guitar Method - Book 1 and continue through subsequent method books. For a classical guitar approach, I use the Suzuki Guitar Method, the Fredrick Noad Method Books, and the Christopher Parkening Guitar Method Book.
I truly enjoy seeing each of my students develop a deeper knowledge and appreciation for music. I believe each student must be taught in a way that allows them to grow and develop at their own pace, and without feeling overwhelmed. Through positive praise and personal accomplishments a student's desire to progress fuels their motivation. By working closely with each student, I find their inspirations and tailor my instruction to their needs. I work with the student and their family to determine a realistic expectation for each individual student.
