Overview:
I have been a music educator for over 20 years. I was a middle school band director for 14 years. All of my bands received first division and second division ratings at festivals and my students received first and second division ratings at individual solo and ensemble festivals. In addition, I was a judge for solo and ensemble and festivals. My students took trips to Chicago for music workshops and to see the Chicago Symphony. I left the profession 4 years ago to be a stay at home mom. I have been teaching online and in my home for the past 4 years. After graduating from Western Michigan University, I did some masters work and continuing education at Michigan State University. I finished my Masters Degree in Psychology at Kaplan University.
I now live in Holly Springs, NC with my son.
EXPERIENCE
During my years of teaching in East Lansing Michigan my band programs continually earned first and second division ratings at festivals. We took trips to Chicago every other year to see the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and to do a workshop at Northwestern University and my students received first and second division ratings at Solo and Ensemble both at the district and state levels. I was a judge for solo and ensemble and band festivals.
I also have experience teaching beginning strings, choir, and general music.
METHODS USED
For the Clarinet, I typically use The Hendrickson Method book series with supplemental books on the side to enhance their various levels. For flute and saxophone, I will evaluate based on the student's level. Once I have established a method book, I incorporate solos and additional techniques. I also encourage the students to bring music from their band class and/or other solos they may be working on for festivals, competitions, or auditions.
I guide the student based on their level and overall goals.
LESSON STYLE
Nothing is more rewarding than seeing my students succeed and enjoy learning music. I encourage the students to progress at their own pace, while offering some challenge at each level. I use incentives to encourage the students to continue to progress, while getting a sense of accomplishment. I am encouraging, gentle, demonstrate techniques, and help where students struggle. I like to have fun in the lesson and make the lessons enjoyable for the student. Each student is unique and I tailor my style to meet the needs of each student.
