Overview:
I have been playing the flute for 30 years! Back in school, I performed and competed actively. I love to play and love to teach. In another life, I would be a professional musician, but for now, I play in my spare time and try to encourage others by teaching. I know the feeling of performing and helping others feel emotion with music. I also know how great it feels to master a difficult piece of music. The flute can be challenging, and it takes a lot of practice and focus, but it is definitely worth it.
EXPERIENCE
I started tutoring students on the flute at a very young age and have done it off and on since then. I like to play with students and encourage performances and help with competitions. When I was in school, I competed in solo and ensemble competitions and also performed in All-State Band and other honor bands. I have performed with concert bands, orchestras, ensembles, and marching bands. I love all kinds of music and find a lot of satisfaction in helping students understand the beauty of the flute.
METHODS USED
I don't believe in just one way, each student is different! For beginners, often the struggle is getting a good sound out of the flute and learning fingering and how to read music all at the same time. I like to take it step-by-step with reasonable goals. As students progress, we start to incorporate more and more into the repertoire while focusing on fundamentals and sound. But, I like to keep it fun along the way by playing along with my students, bringing in duet music and listening to the greats like Galway.
LESSON STYLE
I love the flute and love teaching it! Each students has his or her own goals and my goal is to help students accomplish their goals. Some are learning to be competitive, some just want to play in the band, others are playing for fun. Whoever they are, I want to help them appreciate the instrument and love music. We take steps and set specific goals. I like students to understand why we do things. I also like to make it fun and engaging. I want students to walk away from each lesson knowing they benefited from the experience.
