Course Work: Lyon College
I'm a Junior at Lyon College in Arkansas currently double majoring in Computer Science and Music. I've formally studied music since I was in 7'th grade though I've loved it since I was little. My journey as a musician has gone many places, from premiering my own compositions in a small quartet to performing in an opera. I've always viewed music as a blessing in my life and I want to share it with as many students as I can. Music has brought me so much joy and I'm looking forward to sharing it with others.
While I don't have much experience teaching instruments (yet!!!), I have been teaching for a long time. Dating back to high school I would often tutor students on various subjects like math, chemistry, and, of course, music. I was known for explaining things to students that they couldn't understand the way that the teachers would teach it. Nowadays, I'm often tutoring my fellow music majors on music theory and I'm planning on starting a club next semester at my college to teach people music that don't want to learn in a classical teaching method.
I believe that there is no one method you can use for every student. Method books can be useful but I try not to rely on them because I always found them boring if overused. I try to build lessons around styles of music that the student is interested in. It's always a balancing act trying to find the music for each student. The trick is to find music that is challenging enough for them to learn from playing it, interesting enough for them to want to pick their instrument up and practice, but not too challenging that they'll get frustrated with it. This is harder to do than working solely out of a method book but I believe that it can give better results.
I love seeing students develop a passion for music. Each student learns differently. A teaching style that may work for one student may not work on another. I must be flexible in my teaching methods to adapt to each student and their needs. Especially in the beginning, it's important for students to know that they have made progress and accomplishments. I try to do this by setting goals and doing my best to help them achieve those goals. It's important for me to receive input from the students because, while I'll do my best to adapt my teaching to their needs, having input from students helps a lot both for them and me.
