Overview:
I graduated from Arizona State University with a Bachelor of Music Degree, piano emphasis, and a Master of Education Degree in Elementary Education. My goal in teaching is to empower, inspire, and motivate every student to obtain their personal best, and to develop a life-long love of music. I have a varied background in music, and am comfortable teaching all styles of music. I also teach chords, theory, and improvisation and incorporate it into the lesson in a practical way. Many former students are professional musicians and singers. I am currently employed as an elementary music teacher in the public school system. I love to see my students motivated and enjoying the learning process!
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching piano at age sixteen at a music studio and have taught continuously since that time. I have successfully taught piano, guitar, and uke in my own studio as well as for other studios for many years and feel strongly that students should learn in a way that is motivating and rewarding. I have extensive experience working with young students as well as adults, and teach a variety of styles and genres of music including classical, pop/rock, country and contemporary praise music. I have an excellent understanding of music theory and can teach chords and improvisation if requested by a student to do so.
METHODS USED
I prefer the Hal Leonard All in One Series or also use Bastien Piano method for piano instruction when teaching children. I feel these curriculums offer a great foundational approach, are well rounded, sequential, and motivating for students. When teaching beginning adults, I teach the basics, always keeping their goal and interests in mind. I also have a lot of experience teaching/coaching Worship Leaders who need to play keys and sing, and have many years experience in this role myself. When teaching improvisational skills, I make sure the students have an understanding and a level of mastery that will support playing chords and improvising.
LESSON STYLE
I believe that anyone can achieve success when pursuing the study of music! It is the teacher's role to discover strengths and interests and to guide the student in developing their fullest musical potential. As an educator, I understand that students need assignments that are at their independent level of study, and base the lesson experience on that knowledge. I love seeing the joy and confidence that emerges as students progress toward their goal of playing and singing well! My goal is to provide the highest quality lesson and to engage students in the learning process.
