Overview:
I am an active educator and performer in the North Jersey area. I teach K-6 elementary general music in Midland Park, NJ, which was recently recognized by NAMM as one of the "Best Communities for Music Education 2014." Although I am a classically trained soprano, I work on a variety of different literature with my voice and piano students, including folk songs, pop music, musical theater and of course, classical. I believe that well-rounded musicians make good musicians! I have been singing as a solo church cantor since the age of 12, and it has given me the opportunity to perform a wide range of sacred and classical repertoire in a variety of occasions, including weddings, masses and funerals. I love to play the piano, and the majority of my piano playing happens in classroom rehearsals and school performances.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience dates back to my student teaching placement in 2009, where I taught private voice lessons to high school-aged boys and girls. Since then, I have been consistently teaching voice and piano students in their homes. I really love working with young children, I enjoy their "joie de vivre", curiosity and imagination! I thank my lucky stars every day that my job never seems like work, because I am genuninely having a great time making music. I am eager to take on some bright new students who would like to begin their musical journey with an energetic, passionate teacher such as myself!
METHODS USED
For beginning piano students, I typically start with the Hal Leonard "My First Piano Adventure for the Young Beginner," series. As students progress in their piano studies, I begin introducing solo repertoire that will support the concepts being learned in the book series. I will also assign small writing projects from time to time, to sharpen students' compositional and music reading skills. For voice students, my approach will vary, depending on individual experience and skills. For high school age students, I typically use Italian and English art songs, as well as classic musical theater pieces. For younger singers, Disney songs, pop and folk songs are the standard for lessons. Singers of all ages will be guided towards the path of music literacy, musical concepts presented in lessons will be age appropriate and based upon experience.
LESSON STYLE
I love helping people discover their unique potential and passion for music! It is important to me to understand the complete student; by learning about what inspires a student, I am able to be a better teacher to that student. The music teacher-student bond can be very special, and I strive to make meaningful, positive relationships with all of my students. I am enthusiastic and encouraging to my students, and I am always sensitive to individual needs and learning styles. In lessons, constructive criticism is always coupled with a positive note; this is an important, delicate balance that's crucial to motivated music learning. Small achievements are praised, because I believe that little steps help us to reach those bigger goals.
