2012- Berklee College of Music Full Tuition Scholarship
I'm currently a working bassist, guitarist and singer songwriter, playing gigs, shows and sessions all over the Boston Area. I've had the privilege of touring South America and playing for numerous international jazz festivals. In 2016, I graduated from Berklee College of Music. I teach because I know know a lot of fundamental things that I wish someone had taught me sooner. And now I can teach them to you! Often, I'll leave a lesson feeling I've learned as much as from a student as they have from me.
I began teaching guitar lessons as a high school senior, and have enjoyed seeing others progress ever since. Among my one time students I can count a a former Boston Commissioner of Transportation! As a member of several prestigious Berklee programs including the BGJI, I've had the privilege to teach masterclasses in the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Panama, Spain and Colombia. Having studied with many teachers including jazz luminaries John Patitucci, Ben Street, Joe Lovano, Kenny Werner and Hal Crook, I've absorbed a multitude of techniques to help an individual student achieve his or her goals.
I begin with a thorough assessment to determine a path from the student's current goals to their abilities. If for instance, a beginner wanted to be an R&B guitarist, we'd select some of his or her favorite players and recordings, identify elements of interest and, in conjunction with his or her current abilities and use that to formulate practice material. I like to tie the fundamentals of technique, expression and theory to learning songs. While I may use method books as supplementary material, the breadth of teaching comprises individualized exercises or games, as I call them, and learning songs or pieces. I also enjoy providing students with a rudimentary historical context for their endeavors as I believe that knowing where you're coming from helps you figure out where you want to go.
My goal, whether a student purse a career in music or not, is to aid development becoming not simply an instrumentalist, but a musician. Most humans are taught to recognize colors, why not sounds? I encourage improvisation, composition and study of the masters, but my priority is that it all be fun: I wouldn't hold myself to drudgery and certainly wouldn't expect that of a student. I believe every individual possess an innate musicality- the trick is to prompt a student to develop musical skills, propelled by their own inner voice.
