I have been playing percussion for at least 40 years and share my love for music through teaching and performance. I presently am a show group member of Samba New York where I am section leader for the third surdo section. I play many Brazilian percussion instruments as well. I am also the section leader of the North Shore Symphony Orchestra and the Massapequa Philharmonic Orchestra where I play timpani. And though I presently play timpani, I have extensive experience playing mallet instruments, drumset, latin percussion and world percussion.
I enjoy teaching students my craft in percussion whether it is drumset, world or classical genres. I have both experience in Orff and Kodaly methodology. I teach students to listen to each other and to learn and know the music that they play so that they are not playing just notes. They make the music, so what they play is there's to share. Playing the instruments require knowing the instrument that is being played and while they do this, they learn how to sing, and write the music and identify what styles and genres the music is intended. I am very pragmatic and let the become the musician that they want to be, I share my music with them and let them share with me. I believe strongly that students can teach and grow as well as learn from me.
I believe that the student is always important. They are the ones that come to me to learn and in exchange, i learn from them. I play many different styles of percussion, therefore when I first meet I introduce myself and tell the about me and what I do. And I ask them what their experiences are, what they want to learn and what got the them interested in playing drums and\or percussion. I have also studied the methods of Kodaly who's though process is to develop ones sense of listening and and musicality. I also have studied Orff who strongly uses percussion in his teaching. It also lets the student experiment with the instruments but also how to approach and play instruments. I use anywhere from music that allows the student to learn to control they way the play to the student being able to write, sing and listen to music.
Nothing is more rewarding to have students develop a compassion for the music that is played. Whether it is for family, friends or playing in front of a large audience. I think it is important for students to practice what is taught but not to overwhelm them. Music that they play whether it is for a recital or an audition should be an exciting and fulfilling experience and not feel like it is something that is overwhelming. I teach them how to hold the sticks or mallets, how to approach the instruments, some history when it is asked, how to read notes and understand that music comes from themselves and how to make i their own. It is important to learn what inspires them and what it is they want to know.
