Overview:
I'm a driven, passionate person who loves music. My goal in being a teacher is to bring that feeling of fun, satisfaction, and calm that I get from music to the generation or to anyone who wishes to learn. In 2018, I graduated with a degree in voice from Towson University where I had many wonderful opportunities to work with amazing faculty and colleagues. In April, I had the privilege to play the role of The Count in Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro, my first 4 act opera. In addition to my classical training, I had the opportunity to expand my styles including jazz and world music.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience dates back to around 2017 when I first took a class in vocal pedagogy. In the class, I learned about the inner workings of the voice, the musculature and how to properly teach voices of any age. Since then, I have been working diligently to relay the most valuable information from my own teachers to my own students including proper breath support, open throat singing, and above all, having fun while doing so. Through teaching more students. I hope to expand my knowledge of the voice so I can continue to put people on the right path to great vocal health.
METHODS USED
For first time students, I immediately begin focusing on the aspect of breath related to the voice. I achieve this by utilizing exercises such as Lip Trills, Tongue rolling, and belly laughs. The is a fun, interesting, and above all effective way to show the student what muscles are working and where. From there, I begin to build upon warmups starting from the simple (e.g. 3-5 note scales) eventually leading to more difficult (e.g. octave runs with triplet passages). This coupled with repertoire choice will set a solid foundation for the young or inexperienced singer while also allowing them to explore the more fun aspects.
LESSON STYLE
When I meet a student, I take notes on what kind of music they like, what their goals are, and why they feel like voice lessons are the best way for them to achieve that goal. From there I take the pace at whatever the student is comfortable with occasionally pushing it a little bit if progress seems to be too slow. I believe that it is important to challenge but not overwhelm. I also believe that a key part of singing is a healthy technique. My number one goal as a teacher is to provide that base for students so they can continue to sing for many years of their lives.
