Overview:
I've played keyboards professionally since I was 16 years old. I have a great love of Jazz and the American Song Book.I attended Berklee School of Music and studied arranging and Jazz Composition and graduated magnum cum laude. After college I performed with bands throughout New England and at various venues and functions. I've worked composing and recording Jingles and have also done freelance work for Stellar Records,(a major Karaoke company) providing backing tracks for many of their CDs. I am familiar with contemporary music theory, chord structures, harmony, scales and improvisation and I enjoy imparting that knowledge to others.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience dates back to my teenage years where I taught beginner students the basics of piano.Later in my college days I helped students with limited musical backgrounds learn the basics of music theory. I believe beginner piano students should start with the basics but also learn contemporary chord theory so they can soon begin to play with others. This is more important if they are older.I think this combination is helpful in motivating them to practice which creates the fastest progress.
METHODS USED
I see what ability level the student is at and then decide which method books would be most helpful.I will supplement with my own material when appropriate. For beginning students who are younger,I like Hal Leonard's Essential Elements and Alfred, among others. For adults I try and find out what the student is interested in accomplishing and tailor the lessons accordingly.I like to give each student a good backing of music theory and an exposure to a wide variety of styles.I want to have each student be open to all types of music.
LESSON STYLE
I like to discover each students reason for taking music lessons. Then, develop a plan that will help them achieve their goals. With younger students I feel it is best to stick to the method book's plan. With older and adult students you can be more flexible. In jazz, pop, rock and blues playing I try and help them develop a good "feel";whether playing chords or soloing.I also like to focus on improvisation, using chord scales and simple riffs to develop the student's own style.I like students to bring examples of what they are listening to so we can analyze the material together and discover what gives the music it's unique character.
