I'm a bright and enthusiastic instructor who loves to bring out the best in my students. I have a passion for all types of music and I believe that music can reach across generations. I recieved my first degree from Central Piedmont Community College, where I studied piano, and went on to Nazareth College where I am working on a Bachelor's of Music degree in Music Therapy. I have played piano since I was a child, and started clarinet when I was 10. I love both instruments and enjoy teaching and performing on both!
I have experience teaching a few students throughout my college years, and I have always enjoyed the rewards and challenges that comes with private instruction. I believe that hard work and dedication is important to learning an instrument, but each student responds to different teaching styles and that in turn influences their motivation to practice. I enjoy both classical and modern music, and am open to teaching a multitude of different styles and genres. I believe it is important for a student to enjoy learning music, but to also recognize that learning music is like learning a new language! You can always foster knowledge and teach new skills, but encouragement and motivation comes with a good relationship between teacher and student!
For beginning students, I will usually recommend a fundamentals book to help structure the lessons and teach the basics before moving onto repertoire that is more advanced. For others who either have more experience or are adults, I create lesson plans based on their goals for taking private lessons.
I believe all students can be successful, and each person develops at their own rate. I believe that anyone who begins taking music lessons should have a goal in mind, whether it is for the near or far future. Goals such as learning a specific song, wanting to be able to accompany themselves to sing, or just because they believe music is great, it doesn't matter. Setting goals allows a student to measure their own progress.
