Overview:
I am a highly experienced, versatile, energetic and creative voice and piano teacher. I teach all ages and most styles. I am trained as a classical pianist and became a professional jazz singer in New York City in my late teens. I received my Bachelors of Fine Arts degree and later a Masters in Music Education degree from Columbia University. I am a singer songwriter no perform in mlvarious settings including resorts, concerts, and local music venues. I enjoy helping my students develop their potential and explore the language of music.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching when I was an undergraduate music student. I was assigned as a tutor for a failing ear-training student and was surprised to discover how much I genuinely enjoyed helping him develop his innate potential. Together, he and I began to explore and uncover pathways that enabled him to overcome the hurdles in his path. The process was very creative and rewarding, and it required us both to feel safe and work together creatively to find a way to improve his vocal ability and auditory capacity. Almost two decades later, I remember the sense of accomplishment both of us felt at the break-through that we shared. We had successfully broken through a barrier and a new world of musicianship was now available for this student. It is this process of self - discovery that inspires me to teach.
METHODS USED
Each student is unique. I tailor my approach and the materials I use in lessons to the specific needs and interests of the individual student. I strive to develop overall musicianship and expressive playing/singing, and introduce concepts in a sequential and progressive manner. Lessons include sight reading, notation, improvisation, ear-training, theory and repertoire building. It is important to me that my students' feel connected to the material they are playing/singing, therefore i hand-pick particular pieces that they have responded to and enjoyed.
LESSON STYLE
Music is a universal language. Like any language, it enables us to communicate with anyone, anywhere in the world , who is familiar with this language. It allows us to express ourselves in non verbal ways and provides us with an outlet for communicating feelings and emotions.
It is my great joy to witness a student discover a new world. My goal is to provide a safe space for exploration and to guide my students toward self - discovery.
Each individual has their own learning style and it is my job to find a way to successfully engage each student.
