I am excited to help you on your musical journey. As a child, I always listened to and wanted to make music. I started my guitar studies as a youth, and quickly moved into traditional classic guitar lessons. In 2014, I started performing regularly as a soloist and in ensembles, began teaching in 2019, and in 2020 I graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in guitar performance, where I studied classic guitar with Michael Partington. I’ve performed extensively throughout the greater Seattle area and the greater northwest. I have experience with collaborative programming, accompanying singers and working with choirs. During university, I also performed with wind players. I opened my own studio in 2021 in the South Snohomish County area. In addition to playing and teaching guitar, I am also a classical composer. I have studied composition from a young age, and at university. I aspire to the high standards held throughout classical music.
I’ve been teaching solo guitar since college, 2019. In learning the guitar, a common problem is that students feel they cannot learn enough before reaching points where struggle and confusion emerge. So one of my goals is to help students with musical flexibility and comfort at every stage of learning music. I respect many different historical styles and approaches. I've played in and observed many masterclasses by world renowned artists, which has informed my teaching. Having performed extensively as a soloist, ensemble member and in competitions and auditions, I am well positioned to help students with performance related issues.
I have experience with several formal guitar training approaches that I have studied personally as well as analyzed at University. I am able to bring the best aspects of these methods, along with my own insights to help individual students, taking into account the needs of each unique student. Especially with beginner students, I usually use some of my own exercises and reading sheets. For me, thinking about visual coordination is important, so I always want to gauge students’ note reading skills. For students who are already quite accomplished, I very much believe that either complex exercises or larger sets of studies must be used in preparing the technique for playing the advanced pieces.
I want my students to gain the most experience with technique and musical concepts early on in lessons, so there’s always time to enjoy what they have learned. In my teaching, I am always focused on transmitting the technique and knowledge for sophisticated playing, regardless of the style. What I take the most pleasure in is trying to carry forward as much of that as possible while minimizing confusion and sense of trouble in pursuing music. Each student has a unique physical, mental, creative and cognitive makeup, and I recommend solutions to them which I consider good investments in healthy and versatile technique. I value your time. We do not always have the time to practice a great deal, but if I can help you do something valuable with that time, that’s what I strive for. I want you to leave every lesson either with more experience or knowledge you won’t forget.
