Overview:
I have years of experience performing and teaching both classical and jazz styles, and try to make lessons fun for my students. Having studied some of the most renowned saxophonists in their field, including Timothy McAllister and Eugene Rousseau, I am comfortable teaching saxophonists of all levels. As a performer I have won or placed in numerous competitions through the country, performed a concerto with a professional orchestra for an audience of 3,000, and have have played hundreds of jazz gigs. Currently I am pursuing a specialist in music performance degree from the University of Michigan.
EXPERIENCE
I guess you could say I started teaching back in sixth grade when I taught my sister how to play clarinet and saxophone soon after, and have continued to work with here on both instruments for many years. Now she is first chair in her bands as a music ed major. I formaly started teaching others when I was a junior in high school and since then have taught a wide range of students. I have experience teaching beginers through high school students, including adults. I have had students in my hometown in California, Minneapolis, MN, and in Evanston, IL.
METHODS USED
For beginers I will start them off working through a beginig method book, gradually learning new skills and notes along the way. Eventually we will work on various solo pieces such as classical repertoire, or even movie or pop tunes. I will sometimes use Smart Music, a computer program that gives the opportunity to play along with a "band" gaining valuable experince playing with others while in a private lesson setting. For students interested in jazz, we can can learn jazz standards, learn basic jazz style, and work in improvisation. With all students I will also work on fundamentals and access what the student most needs work on. I can give various exercises for improving sound quality, articulation, rhythm and playing in time, technique, and more.
LESSON STYLE
Each student learns differently and has trouble with differnt things, therefore I adapt the way I teach a student based on their needs, learning style and skill level. What the student is interested in is also very important in order to keep the student engaged. Most topics can be taught using various types of music that the student is interested in.
