I have been playing the violin since I was 3, my father was my first violin teacher. Music is a big part of my life and I do enjoy performing and teaching very much. I love sharing my music knowledge with others, seeing my students making progress and achieving their goals is priceless and makes my life more worth living. I have performed as violin soloist, chamber musician and concertmaster of orchestras, those are valuable experiences I had in life that I'd love to pass on to others. I have also had student recitals every year in the past ten years, my students and I have toured and performed in China.
I started teaching at the age of 15 at my father's violin school in Yunnan, China. The school currently has more than two hundred violin students and five violin teachers. Almost every year I travels back to China and give master classes and exchange valuable teaching experience with the students and teachers there. Summer 2006, my students and I were invited by the International Youth and Children's Art Festival, we stayed in China for ten days. Our performance got well accepted by the audience and was broadcasted on the local TV and newspapers. It was an unforgettable experience for all of us. After moving to the US, I started my own violin studio in 2002. Every year, my students have the opportunity to perform in different concert settings, participate in our annual summer concerts, take national music exams, and audition with many orchestras and music schools.
My teaching method is mainly the combination of The Juilliard School of Music and Suzuki Method. Lessons are specifically designed to fit individual students age, background, strength and personality. In my classes, not only students are taught how to play the violin, they are also taught ear training, sight-reading, music theory, and performance skills; Most importantly, students are also taught self-confidence, discipline, appreciation of the arts, and the pride that comes from a job well done.
I try my best to keep lessons fun, especially with the younger students. For example, Sometimes we play music games, sometimes we walk/dance to learn about rhythm, sometimes we sing. I also have small group practices each month to combine students at about the same level, they play togher, they perform for each other, make constructive suggestions and encourage each other. Each student is very different, I usually try to get to know the student ( and parents) at the first few lessons so I know which approach works better to help the student. Some students need more love, support and encouragements, some students need more displine and structure.
