I am a motivated and fun-loving music teacher of all age ranges. I have been teaching private voice and piano lessons since I was a senior in high school, and I love working with all of my students and watching them grow throughout the course of our lessons. I graduated magna cum laude from The Hartt School in 2001, receiving my BFA in Musical Theatre Performance. A year after I graduated from college, I knew that I wanted to teach in schools along with teaching privately, so I got my PreK thru 12th Grade Music Teaching Certification for the State of CT through The ARC Program, and have been teaching in both the private and public school settings ever since. Being a working, professional musical theatre performer along with my teaching skills helps me to teach all of my students on different levels.
I started my private teaching instruction in both voice and piano at The Renaissance Center in Southbury, CT. I have always enjoyed teaching my craft and enstilling the love for music, theatre, and dance into my students in the same ways that my teachers did for me. I have been teaching privately since I was in high school, and I have been public and private school teaching general music and choir for over 15 years. I enjoy teaching all ability levels, and different genres of music. I believe that my students are the ones who motivate me to be a better teacher. If they don't enjoy what I am teaching them and aren't learning something new, then I am not doing my job properly and am also not enjoying myself. I am really looking forward to branching out and meeting new students in the near future!
For Voice Students: I start each lesson with 10-15 minutes of vocal warm-ups and scales. The remainder of the lesson revolves around vocal pieces that either I think would be a good match for the voice, age, maturity, and ability of the student, or preparing a student for an audition or performance that they would like to perform a specific piece for. I also like to incorporate sight reading and ear training into my lessons, especially as the student grows into their voice. For Piano Students: I usually use the Alfred Piano Course book series, unless a student has already established themselves in a different lesson book series, are familiar with it, and wish to stay with that series. There is an adult series of Alfred Piano Course lesson books as well, so I am able to gear lessons for adults towards their teaching series as well. I usually teach beginning to intermediate level piano students, so these books are extremely helpful to those students because they teach proper fundamentals of piano playing, as well as theory, ear training, and technique. For older and more advanced students, I also try to teach them pieces that they are familiar with and / or like from pop culture.
I have always had a love of teaching, and I especially love when a student achieves something that I know that they have been working very hard on in their lessons. Nothing is more rewarding for a teacher than the success and achievements of their students. I do the very best that I can to help each of my students achieve each of their music aspirations, hopes, dreams, and goals. I try to use as many different teaches styles as possible, as I know that not all students learn in the same manners. The more I learn about the students themselves, the easier it is for me to adapt to their wants and needs.
