Traveled and toured with several rock and roll bands, including opening for The Allman Brothers, The Who, Winner of 14
Overview:
At Five years old, I began learning the piano. I learned to read music and play reasonably well. Then, baseball came along. As I entered high school, I learned the guitar, starting with a Silvertone guitar with the small accompanying amplifier. I had sung in the church choir, so my Boy Scout friends then became my band mates during the 60's In the 70's, I went on the road with a talented rock band opening for large acts including the Allman Brothers Band and The Who. We played in New York, New Jersey and Ohio, and of course, Florida. I've always like the creative arts, which led to owning my own advertising agency based in Saint Petersburg, managing advertising accounts that included a division of Anheuser Busch Agricultural. For the last eight year, I have been with the Downtrodden Road Band. Currently, I play part time with the Down Trodden Road Band writing and recording. Occasionally we play large gatherings, but mostly, play for our friends and neighbors. As I age, Iove playing bass, guitar and my new found love harmonica.
EXPERIENCE
I started teaching my nephew, who was fourteen at the time, the guitar. First, with the basic easy chords. Then, we would play along together, especially the easy songs he liked. After some time, he began to get excited about the guitar, and began practicing on his own. Now he is teaching guitar in Orlando while he attends University of Central Florida. I also helped his younger brother learn easier ways to finger pick melodies, which he preferred. I am now teaching bass guitar via Skype to my college room mate who decided at age 68 he wanted to learn. So, I helped him find the instrument that met his requirements of large hands, a reliable instrument, and additional teaching in Colorado. We have weekly sessions that include simple fretboard runs and tempos as he learns. The greatest thing about teaching others is that I learns so much from them. And, It's a great feeling when I can help others learn how to play music.
METHODS USED
My method begins by talking with beginning students to learn their likes and desires, so we can build a beneficial teaching plan together. I teach to the student, not to me. The results lead to a happier, more positive and dedicated student. I also teach in bite sized pieces, usually using the style of music, or even a favorite song the students like. Once a student has a small success, they will seek another. That is when the student sees that is possible to improve. And, that is when he or she can develop a passion for music and their chosen instrument. I like to play along with the student so they can discover the sensation of playing along with others, and that they can actually do it. Music should be fun and exciting.
LESSON STYLE
My method and teaching style are one in the same. I am a teacher of music, not a task master. The student will only succeed if he/she sees some success. With a small success, they will continue to learn more. Once students learn something they have in their mind, they usually will stay with music, sometimes for the rest of their lives. I like teaching beginners something easy. Then, I play along with what they learned. Their eyes and face light up with smiles. One small success leads to another. I can teach children to read music as I learned it, or teach by listening and feel. As a beginner I was a slave to the instrument, now I play sometimes without looking. I teach music , not notes on the paper.
