I am a determined and driven teacher who loves to share my passion for music with my students. I graduated this spring from Oklahoma City University with my Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance. My music career has given me the opportunity to sing in many different styles including Opera, Jazz, Music Theatre, Pop, Rock, Country, and more. I have had the opportunity to travel across the US performing in many voice competitions, as well as winning a national award for my performances. I have been taking voice lessons myself for twelve years. This experience has given me a unique insight not only in how we teach, but how we learn.
My teaching experience began in high school, as I began teaching children in a group setting. I worked at a children's educational summer camp where I instructed choirs and chorus singers for Musical Theater. During my time at OCU, I taught private voice lessons to students with diverse vocal goals. I have found that the best way to teach singing is to let your students sing! While discussing technique and concepts is important, it can never replace the experience of practicing with your voice.
I base my teaching methods on the student I am teaching. For students that are children at a beginner level, I typically begin with the essential elements of creating vocal foundation which I draw from many sources. Once we have set a good foundation, we tend to begin working on repertoire that is appropriate for the level at which they are singing, using those songs as learning opportunities. For adults, I begin by asking about the goals of the individual student and I then formulate a strategy to help the student reach their specific singing goals. We may work towards those goals with vocalization exercises, vocal repertoire, and more. Regardless of our goals, I work to discover the interests of the individual and keep voice lessons enjoyable and engaging.
My favorite thing about teaching is getting to discover how others learn. The approach I use for one student will not always work for another. I think every person has a unique learning style and I love to develop new ways to teach concepts to my students. I work to encourage my students to be an active participant in setting and achieving goals in our work together, while maintaining a fun, positive atmosphere. At the end of the day, voice lessons are meant to help you to become more confident in your voice so you can start making music in a way that feels fulfilling to you.
I had a few lessons with Macey to prepare for a Jazz gig. She was receptive, kind, and engaged the whole time. Great voice teacher!
