Overview:
I am a musician, an educator, and a lifelong learner who enjoys developing students' potential and watching them succeed at every musical challenge. I graduated from Bob Jones University in 2012 with a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance, and went on to receive a Master of Music degree in Music History from the University of Hartford's prestigious Hartt School, graduating in 2015. Since my childhood, I have had the opportunity of participating in church music ministries, and now serve as congregational pianist and choir accompanist at Knotty Oak Baptist Church in Coventry, Rhode Island.
EXPERIENCE
I opened a small music studio in September of 2017, with some borrowed lesson books and just a few students. Since then, my studio has doubled, and my students have shown consistent progress. As an instructor, I don't merely teach concepts, pieces, and theory; I teach my students strategies to problem solve, overcome challenges, practice effectively, and become lifelong learners. Along the way, my students learn fun, familiar pieces that they enjoy, play games that teach music theory or test their note-reading abilities, and have multiple opportunities to perform for friends and family.
METHODS USED
For young beginner students, I use either Faber and Faber's Piano Adventures or Bastien Piano Basics. I also supplement these methods with level-appropriate materials from my private library. For adult students, lessons are tailored to meet the student's interests and purpose. Lesson times are learning times, but I try to make the process fun, with time for creativity and music games. Students are also encouraged to bring in music that they want to learn, which gives me additional opportunies to teach each student how to practice.
LESSON STYLE
Every student learns differently and progresses at a different rate. In order to keep my students motivated, I balance tasks that each student finds easy and enjoyable with tasks that are more challenging. My students know that if they say something is too hard, I will ask them to try it again another way, using their strategies to problem solve. Most of the time, they find that it isn't too hard after all, which boosts their confidence. With every difficult challenge accomplished, students become more motivated and eager.
