Overview:
I am a product of the dedication and experience of those who taught me, and I strive to provide an enriching and comfortable environment in my own teaching practice to pay it forward. I studied music education and clarinet performance at the University of Illinois in Champaign, IL, then moved to Madison, WI to pursue a masters degree in clarinet performance. I enjoy having a well-rounded musical career by performing, teaching, and working towards accessible music education and community engagement.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching young clarinetists privately for nearly 8 years, and more recently began working as a clinician and teaching masterclasses at local schools. I prioritize curating diverse resources for teaching and performing, and am frequently trying new technique books and contemporary music for myself and my students. As a performer, I have made great progress through participating in chamber music, and so I encourage my own students to collaborate with their peers and frequently will play chamber music in lessons. My priority is always to meet students where they're at, and work with them to create attainable goals.
METHODS USED
I like to start beginning students with a combination of sheet music and by rote teaching. If a student comes to me with method books or other materials, we will start with those and I will suggest other materials as appropriate. I often have more advanced students work through various scales books and Rose etudes, and whatever other type of music interests them. I utilize duets often in lessons to work on sight reading and blend, tuning, and leadership. It is more important to me that a student is engaged in what they are working on rather than requiring specific materials.
LESSON STYLE
When playing clarinet, the body is an important part of the music-making process, and so I encourage students to really pay attention and get in touch with their body. I teach with an understanding that every individual is different, and so what works for me may not work for someone else, and I have a wide variety of examples and experiences to draw on in order to make sure my students understand and internalize the concepts we talk about. I love supporting my students to make their own musical discoveries, and ask a lot of open-ended questions to encourage exploration and autonomy.
