I am a versatile multi-instrumentalist instructor who enjoys teaching students of all ages. I possess a Master of Fine Arts (Performer-Composer) from California Institute of the Arts, a Bachelor of Music (Jazz Studies) from Vancouver Island University, and I even have my Apple Certified Macintosh Technician credential from v2 Consulting. I have won awards for my music and was voted Third Place in the Composers Today State Contest for my compositions via the Music Teachers' Association of California. I write and perform my own music both solo and in a group.
I have been teaching not only music but other subjects such as computer science, mathematics, English, and social studies since I was in high school. I have served as a teaching assistant through graduate school and have taught in both private and classroom settings. I am comfortable with all ages. My goal is to balance a musical education with other elements such as self-confidence, focus, concentration, and of course fun! I think allowing the students to bring in music that they are are interested in learning empowers them to understand music in a more deeper level, but at the same time I like to teach the fundamentals such as music theory, ear training, and technique along with the way.
Piano Marvel and Alfred's piano methods are a great start for all ages as they have books that are geared toward both younger and older beginners. For guitar and bass there are various Hal Leonard books that work well; one thing that I try to do with guitar and bass students is encourage them to know what note they are playing and to eventually read music notation if they are curious and interested in it. Not every student is going to fit with every curricular method out there, so I be sure to tailor the lessons to the particular student as an individual. Eventually students move on to material from the Royal Conservatory of Music.
I like seeing progress and appreciation in music, and to me that is student success. I enjoy helping students meet their individual goals, and I encourage them to work their hardest to achieve their best. I use humor to keep things engaging. I learn from my students what works most effectively for them as individuals. One of the things my students really enjoy are those certificates at the end of the method books. Once the student has mastered a level I am eager to sign those certificates and celebrate the accomplishments with my students and their parents. And I believe that the other very important aspect of success is performing.
I have always wanted to learn how to play the piano. Upon retirement, I decided to take lessons. Linda is a very patient and supportive teacher. Because of her, I can now read music and play increasingly difficult pieces.
A charming and friendly person. I don't have any other experience with other voice coaches but I think she is an excellent and patient teacher. Her being convinced that I can do it gives me the courage to try. With the teaching skills she brings every week, there is also a basket full of smiles and encouragement. I really enjoy working with her.
We've been through quite a few teachers and Linda has a great balance of working through fundamentals but yet still allowing our children to explore their own creative instincts. She's the best!!!
Linda teaches our daughter Guitar and Voice. She is the instructor we have been searching for, blending broad musical knowledge with the detail necessary to master a piece of music. She is a natural, gifted teacher. Our daughter looks forward to her lessons and is motivated to practice in between lessons.
Linda has been my electric guitar teacher for the past two years, when I got started. She has the patience needed to help me learn, and is always cheerful and encouraging of my progress. I am not only learning to play, but to read and understand music, which is a whole other language to learn! I look forward to our weekly sessions, as music, and for me guitar, has opened up a whole new world.
