Doctor of Musical Arts- ASU, Anticipated 2022
Performed in Salzburg, Austria
I am a passionate and motivated performer and teacher in the Phoenix area. I am currently the adjunct oboe instructor at Paradise Valley Community College, and perform regularly with the Symphony of the Southwest, West Valley Symphony, and Prescott Pops Symphony. I received my Bachelor’s degree in oboe performance from Eastern Illinois University and my Master’s degree in oboe performance from Northern Illinois University. I also studied in Salzburg, Austria, and will perform Carmen, Marriage of Figaro, and The Magic Flute in Vienna in 2021. I am currently working on my Doctoral degree at Arizona State University, studying with Martin Schuring. I have taught music history at the collegiate level for two years. When I am not making reeds or practicing, I enjoy playing with my dog, hiking, and spending time with my family.
It's safe to say that I'm the happiest when I'm teaching. I teach students of all levels; whether you're a beginner, auditioning, in college, or even just playing for fun, I will create an individual plan to help you succeed. My studio is a safe place for learning, where no judgement or negativity is tolerated. I strive to set a good example for my students with both my playing and my character. I've been professionally teaching since the age of 18 and will never stop! I encourage my students to step out of their comfort zone and gain the confidence that they need.
I look to strengthen fundamentals immediately: breathing, embouchure, tonguing, etc. Throughout our lessons, the warm up assignments I give continuously seek to strengthen these skills. In the beginning, I also assign short beginner etudes and rhythm exercises. Once the student has a good grasp on fundamentals, I begin to introduce solo repertoire and encourage students to sign up for recitals and solo-ensemble competitions. For adult students, I focus more on how they want to grow and what their ultimate goal is. Overall, I like lessons to be a positive space where we all grow together!
Every person is different. Therefore, it is safe to say that everyone's learning style is different as well. As your teacher, it is my job to discover how you best learn and respond to the material I assign. I make each student an individual plan that will help them succeed. I want my students to have fun, too... after all, that's what music is all about! I like to play duets with my students and teach them basic reed- making tips, something they will need to know if they continue with oboe.
I have had Maja as an oboe teacher for almost a year, and I can say she is amazing. She knows how to fix my mistakes and get better. Every lesson I take I learn something new, and I am definitely eager to.
Maja is absolutely the best oboe teacher I could have asked for. I look forward to going to oboe lessons each week because Maja always makes them super fun and engaging. She is such a hard worker and she always makes sure that each of her students improves their skills and takes away important elements from each lesson. I recently applied for the Phoenix Youth Symphony and Maja helped me with my audition music for it. She prepared me so well that I was super confident in myself when I submitted my application. Because of Maja, I will be a part of the Phoenix Youth Symphony for the 2020-2021 year!
Maja is very knowledgable and teaches me something new each lesson. Turns out I'd been cleaning my oboe wrong since I started! She's also funny, and I look forward to her lessons.
Maja is by far the best oboe teacher I have worked with. She’s very friendly and cares a lot about her students. Not only is she a super talented player, but she’s also a very effective teacher. She taught me more about the oboe and just music in general than I had picked up on my own in the 5 years I had played without an oboe teacher.
Maja is awesome she has taught me so many things greatly and I feel I’ve greatly improved in my oboe playing skills thanks to her.
