As a violinist of 15 years, I love sharing my love of music with others, whether they may be my students, friends, or even acquaintances. Over the years of playing violin, I have learned from university professors, professional orchestral members, nationally renowned conductors, as well as Julliard graduates. My studying with these masters of music has helped me in gaining experience in the art of performing, teaching, mentoring, and most importantly just connecting with other music enthusiasts. In my musical journey, I have had the immense pleasure to perform on prestigious stages around the U.S. such as: Nashville's Grand Ole Opry, Carnegie Hall, and Chicago Symphony Centre to name a few. Learning music has opened a whole other world of opportunities for me, and as a traveling violin instructor I am eager to do the same for my students.
As a senior in highschool, I was offered to teach beginning violin lessons at the homeschool co-op I was attending. Besides teaching the basics of the violin and beginner level music-playing, I gained experience in practicing efficient time management, lesson planning, and working with varying instruction approaches due to the age ranges of my students. The summer following my senior year, I greatly enjoyed being a camp leader for the Anderson University Summer String Camp. As a camp leader, I not only got to mentor and perform with my students, but I formed relationships that have lasted still to this day. In my college years as a Music Performance major, I was frequently involved in musical performances such as, masterclasses, ensembles, solo, and orchestra that have all contributed to my knowledge of teaching. More recently, I have had to opportunity to teach a student in-home violin lessons which has encouraged me to explore teaching as my full-time career.
For students who are just beginning I start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. I personally have worked through this text and I find it more than appropriate for the beginning violinist. As we progress we will graduate to the Suzuki Method books Volume 1. For intermediate students, I will assess the skill level and work from there. To keep learning fun and amusing, I will introduce music of my student's choice. In addition to playing music out of our texts, I will teach my students basic music theory, positioning, and technique exercises.
My goal as a violin instructor is not only to solely teach music, but to also cultivate a love for music in the hearts of my students. My lessons will be a safe space where we can express ourselves through music, free of rigid expectations and at the pace of the learner. Both the teacher and student will work together to set achievable goals each lesson. As a fellow individual who also lives in this busy world, I understand the many demands that life makes of us, and I aim to provide lessons that both promote growth and a passion for violin.
